White Star on Black

Black and white cobbled sidewalks like this one are a hallmark of Lisbon. The stones are pounded into a layer of sand. They’re not all in great shape, and many have been disrupted by modern construction, but there are efforts underway to preserve and restore those that remain. We saw many different motifs in these sidewalks, from geometric like this, to abstract, to figurative.

Green Tiled Facade

Lisbon is full of beautifully tiled buildings. This is one of the first ones we saw, on our first venture out into the Bairro Alto. We were completely enchanted by Lisbon. The architecture was beautiful, and the place had a great vibe. And there was always something completely wacky going on around us. I’d seriously consider moving there, but I have no confidence that I could learn enough Portuguese to survive.
