French Quarter After the Rain

After ten years of talking about it, my friend Donna and I finally made it to New Orleans last May, with husbands in tow. It seems a little spooky to us now. We’d dreamed about this trip for so long, but every year something got in the way. Finally, somehow, we decided that 2005 would be the year. What a good thing we did. New Orleans won’t be the same again for a long time, if ever.

The four of us were so charmed by New Orleans, and we’re hardly alone in that. The people and the food and the city itself were so appealing. It was all the more heartbreaking to hear the stories about Katrina when we had been walking on those streets just a few months before.

I have a lot of photos from New Orleans. It’s going to be a big project for me to get them together and out into the world. It’s my first big effort with my digital camera, and it’s taken me a while to get up to speed on the new processes and workflows that Camera Raw format entails.

Also, it’s taken me some time to feel OK about gathering and sharing my happy travel memories in the wake of the hurricane.

More to come…

  1. I was in New York and saw the World Trade Center for the first time about four months before 9/11. So I kinda know how you feel about New Orleans; which I now regret that I’ve never visited. Lovely photos, as usual!

  2. I never made it to NO – tho my mother, her dad and my son all did (not together). My son mentioned last night that one regret he had was not getting to Mardi Gras in 2005. My mother told me she was glad her dad didn’t live to know about Katrina. Interesting the connections.
